TOP 5 WEDNESDAY (November 30): Favorite Villains

Hey guys! This is a new feature I joined from Goodreads' Top 5 Wednesdays, a weekly book group about our top five favorite things in the middle of the week.

Created by Lainey from GingerReadsLainey and now hosted by Samantha from ThoughtsonTomes, this week's entry describes my favorite villains.

Note: I did a topic like this for my Top Ten Tuesday #20 a couple weeks ago, so if I sound repetitive on numbers 2 and 1 on this post, that's why.

Favorite Villains
--It's been a little while since we've done the villain topic, and this one will definitely be a recurring one in the group as there are always new villains to talk about. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO AVOID HARRY POTTER CHARACTERS!!!! Yes, yes, we all know that Umbridge is the ultimate villain, more hated than Voldemort because she is so realistic. We know that we all love Bellatrix's particular kind of crazed obsession. We all know that Voldemort is such a classic that he is the first person to jump into our minds. We all know the Dursley's suck. See? I strongly encourage you to point out some different villains so that Harry Potter doesn't dominate all the lists. Because as much as we love HP, it does get a little redundant. *jumps off soapbox*

5. Valentine: Mortal Instruments

I always thought Valentine was more of a politician than a father towards Clary and Jace. But that didn't mean he wasn't devious and cunning. To take your own flesh and blood and trick him into thinking you were something more is the most dangerous thing you can do to your son. and to drag Clary into it was just despicable. But that's how Valentine works.

4. Victoria: Twilight

Victoria was so sly, sneaky, quick and devilish. She needed to avenge her love James' death from when Edward killed him in movie one, so she analyzed a newborn vampire army to kill Bella and the Cullens. Her cat-like stance, her small voice!! She was everything. Bryce Dallas Howard was a good Victoria, but Rachelle Lefevre was fierce!!

3. James: Twilight

Before Victoria, was her boo James from the first movie/book. Even he was a dangerous, rogue vampire who played with his food. He played games with Bella, destroyed her leg, bit her arm, swung her around everywhere, just took her apart because he could. He did whatever he wanted because he knew he could. And that is a terrifying guy to mess with!

2. Peter Pan: 'Wendy Darling: Stars'

This may be surprising to those who haven't read the book, but Peter Pan is actually the villain, not Captain Hook!! In fact, Hook is barely in the first book!! Peter is so manipulative, destructive, cocky, violent, misogynistic, jealous, disgusting human being, and I counted down the pages until poor Wendy and her brother Michael got out of Peter's island to go back home. I haven't read the second book, Seas, yet, but I'm hoping Hook helps the Darlings get back home and away from Peter forever.

1. Jeanine: Divergent/Insurgent

In the first two books, Jeanine went from an advisor in Erudite, to a complete control-freak who had wanted to use Tris to control it even more. I'm glad that Four's mom Evelyn was the one to kill her, even though Evelyn was just as bad as Jeanine.

TOP TEN TUESDAY #28: Holiday Gift Guide for Writers

Hosted by Jamie, Jana and Lauren of BrokeandBookish.com, Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly book meme that presents top ten lists on Tuesdays that promotes favorite bookish themes.

This week's theme:

Holiday Gift Guide freebie (ten books to buy the YA lover in your life, 10 books to buy for your dad, etc.)

This week, I'll be listing the top eight books to buy for the writer in your life. Since I'm a writer myself, I hope this list will help you in some bigger capacity.

8. The Writer’s Toolbox: Creative Games and Exercises for Inspiring the ‘Write’ Side of Your Brain

This little book might come in handy for if your writer gets stuck on an idea, or just needs an energy booster. Designed by a longtime creative writing teacher, this innovative kit includes a 64-page booklet filled with exercises and instructions that focus on a "right-brain" approach to writing.

7. Writer's Emergency Kit

Here's another clever way to beat writer's block! This handy booklet comes with
26 illustrated Idea cards,
26 Detail cards with helpful suggestions and specific tips to try
Instructions for individual and class use
"Your portable tool for story resuscitation (or simply creativity rejuvenation)." - Writer's Digest

Writer Emergency Pack

6. Lithograph Tee, Tote or Poster

These merch bags are so cool! Not only are they uniquely designed to fit the novel they represent, but each bag or T-Shirt is designed to have all of the words from the novel itself.

Litograph Alice in Wonderland Tote Bag

5. Standing Desk

I for one can't stand my desk. It's too hard, the chair is too uncomfortable, the desk is too small. It has become a jungle and a junk stash for my old books. So if I received this cool standing desk, I know I'd be the happiest ever!!

Gift ideas for writers: Standing desk

4. 642 Tiny Things To Write About Diary

I think I've seen something like this in Barnes & Noble, and I still think it's a great way to get your writer's creative juices flowing. Each page in this diary shows a prompt on how the writer can finish the story. Like, “The woman/man across from you at a cafe or cubicle: What did he or she dream last night?” Little phrases like that can spark up the imagination.

This diary is part of an ongoing series of San Francisco Writers’ Grotto writing tools, which means that if your writer likes this diary, you’ll know what to get for next year’s present.

624 Tiny Things to Write About

3. Writer's Tea

I love tea more than coffee, and this cute gift from Adagio Teas’ Dragon Age-themed set would be an adorable gift. This specific tea has soothing blends of smokey assam, hazelnuts and tiger eye, allowing your writer to go into their happy place while typing away!

2. Literary Perfumes

Every girl has to have at least one bottle of their favorite perfume. So it's only convienient for a writer to enjoy a good perfume with their favorite book references! Some good perfumes are Sweet Tea Apothecary’s Pemberly: A Jane Austen Inspired Perfume, and Sweet Tea Apothecary’s Dead Writers Perfume.

1. Literary Candles

I love a pretty candle, even more when they are in reference to a favorite book. I don't have any (yet), but I follow a lot of the companies on Instagram, like themeltinglibrary and merakicandles

TOP TEN TUESDAY #27: Thanksgiving Freebie: Authors and Books I'm Thankful For

Hosted by Jamie, Jana and Lauren of BrokeandBookish.com, Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly book meme that presents top ten lists on Tuesdays that promotes favorite bookish themes.

This week's theme:

November 22: Thanksgiving freebie -- tell us what you are thankful for! Books you are thankful for!

Since I kinda did this prompt earlier today for #LilBookishNovember, I'll reiterate my choices here too:

Image result for inger iversen

4. Inger Iversen: 'Running in the Dark'
I've only read the first book of Inger's In the Dark series, but it definitely grabbed my attention. I had thought the book would be about werewolves, but it was about a Russian dhampir (half vampire/half human) and a human black girl on the run from a corrupt government. And they had met and fell in love in a day!! A day!! How does that happen, without making it cheesy? Inger's words and characters made it possible to enjoy vampires in a different way.

Image result for stephenie meyer

3. Stephenie Meyer: 'Twilight'

If you've been following my blog for years, you'll know how huge of a fan I am of Twilight and Stephenie Meyer. She's the one who introduced me to the YA-lit world and non-scary vampires. I'll forever be grateful for her and her magical Edward, Bella and the amazing Cullen family.

Image result for tonya kuper

2. Tonya Kuper: 'Anomaly'

I know I talk about this amazing girl so many times, in almost all of my TTT posts and T5W (top 5 wednesday) posts, but there's a reason why. There's a reason why out of all of the other authors out there, why Tonya has stuck around the most for me. Not only is she a fantastic writer, but she's so sweet and kind and precious!! And she's a diehard nerd!! I'm not a sci-fi fan, but her energy about Star Wars and all things nerdy makes me smile all the time.

Image result for jk rowling

1. J.K. Rowling: 'Harry Potter'

And last but not least, I'll be forever grateful for Joanne Kathleen Rowling and her magical, twisted, charming Potter family. Harry, Hermione, Ron, Fred, George, Luna, Neville, McGonagall, Dumbledore, so many beloved characters from not only my childhood, but also my young adult life. I run home to see Harry Potter Weekend on Freeform. I don't have the books, but I have read them enough to enjoy them for what they bring to the literary table.

Who are some authors and books you're thankful for? Leave comments below!

7th Annual BROKE AND BOOKISH 'SECRET SANTA' Service

This week, this post will be a little different. I wanted to tell you guys about a new (to me) Secret Santa service that I'll be participating in. It's The Broke and the Bookish's 7th annual Secret Santa service!!

It's basically me giving a special Christmas gift to a special book fan, which includes a book from their wishlist and a small gift and/or candy treat.

I've already picked my gift and small present for my match, and while I obviously can't tell you who it is for, I hope she loves it!

The rules apply:

1. Send an email to TBTBSecretSanta (at) gmail (dot) com answering the following questions BEFORE November 13th  with the answers to the following questions:

*BEFORE November 13th means 11:59pm EST on the 12th though if they slip in the wee hours of the morning while I'm sleeping I'm okay but please don't yell at me when you are past the deadline any later when I'm pairing and I say no...I have extended it too many times in the past but with 400+ participants last year I have to shut it down sometime, sorry)

Full Name & Address
Blog URL  (also any other social media accounts you might want to share to help your secret Santa out)
List 10-15 books you'd like to read or a link to a wishlist (please mix it up with older and new releases -- aka maybe things that aren't just available in hardcover right now). DO NOT ASK FOR ARCS please. If your SS wants to throw some in there because they saw it on your Goodreads wishlist or something that's fine but once we had someone ask for mostly ARCs and not everyone has access to an ARC fairy. Also, make sure your Goodreads profile or Amazon wishlist is public at least for the time this runs.
Genres you read the most:
List of your bookish preferences (a few fave authors,  things you WILL NOT READ, does not prefer used books, prefer hardback or paperback, if you are okay with them not getting you something on your wishlist if they think you will like it etc.)
Please give a few things you like or things about yourself (to help with your goodie). See below for examples in the guidelines.
* Suggestions for things to add that could be helpful to tell your Secret Santa for the little gift: general info about yourself, if you celebrate Christmas, hobbies you have, your passions, music you love, things you will not eat/are allergic to,  smells or flavors you do not like, shows you watch/favorite movies, things you collect, any fandoms you are part of, if would love something native to where your Secret Santa lives, coffee/tea you like, favorite colors, foods you love, your style/aesthetic, favorite animals, things you are obsessed with, etc. etc. Also maybe if you have an e-reader and would be willing to get ebooks or a gift card.  Just really anything relevant to your interests that could help them.

Would you be able to send internationally if needed? Please answer with:

A. Yes, I would actually prefer to send and receive internationally
B. No, I cannot.
C. Would prefer not to but will if needed

(if you are outside of US and Canada just know I can't guarantee that you will get somewhere even remotely close to you. I try to work it geographically for you but it all depends on who signs up and where they are from. You can check in here where I will be updating this post to see which countries are represented if you are unsure.
 Are you:
a) Under 18
b) Over 18
Have you participated in this Secret Santa before or is this your first time?
Which closely resembles what kind of package you will be sending out (I will be pairing people with similar answers so please understand by choosing an answer I'm expecting that to be what you send out ):
a) 1 book and a small gift/candy
b) 1-2 books and a couple goodies
c) 2+ books and goodies
Is there somebody that your Secret Santa could contact if they have a question for you? Please ask that person before you put their twitter handle or email address here. I get a LOT of emails to me trying to figure out specific things (ie: what's their favorite color? What GoT character is their fave? Do they have this Funko pop?) to make a great package for their Secret Santa so this might be a little less work for me to be the middleman going back and forth and asking the questions and supplying the answers.
Any questions, comments or additional things your Secret Santa should know?
2. When you receive your Secret Santa match: go play Santa and buy your prezzies -- please read the guidelines below. Send it out no later than December 15th. The earlier the better as the mail is always slow during the holiday season.  IF SOMETHING COMES UP PLEASE EMAIL ME. Communication is super for me.

3. After you send off your package, please email TBTBSecretSanta (at) gmail (dot) com letting us know you sent it off WITH DELIVERY CONFIRMATION/TRACKING (changing it this year, sorry!). Email us again when you receive your package. (Unless there are questions, I will not be responding to these emails due to time but will filing them away). If you have not received your package by January 1st please then email us and I will attempt to contact your Secret Santa. Please understand I will try my damndest to work it out but there is only so much I can do in the event someone decides to be naughty. Karma is a biotch though..maybe they'll get their toes run over by Santa's sleigh.

So like I said, I cannot reveal who my Secret Santa person is, but I hope that she loves what I bought her and shares it on her social media, come December 25!

TOP 5 WEDNESDAY (November 16): Favorite Publishers

Hey guys! This is a new feature I joined from Goodreads' Top 5 Wednesdays, a weekly book group about our top five favorite things in the middle of the week.

Created by Lainey from GingerReadsLainey and now hosted by Samantha from ThoughtsonTomes, this week's entry describes the five Favorite Publishers:

November 16th: Favorite Publishers
--I thought this topic would be a cool way to examine what we read and what publishers put out our favorite books. I encourage you to take a look at your shelf and figure out which books come from which publishers. I think you'd be surprised how many probably end up coming from the same publishing house! Plus, this is your chance to introduce us to some of your favorite small presses or imprints. We talk about the contents or the wrappings of books a lot in this group, but rarely do we talk about the people that bring them together.

I usually don't pay attention to the publishers I buy from, but this should be an interesting topic for me to choose from.

5. Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing

Image result for crushing hearts and black butterfly publishing

Books published:
  • "In the Dark" series by Inger Iversen

4. Sparkpress

Image result for sparkpress

Books published:
  • "Wendy Darling: Stars" by Colleen Oakes

3. SL Hutchinson Publishing

Image result for sl hutchinson publishing

Books published:
  • "Discovering April"
  • "Uncovering Officer Smith"
  • "Seraphina" series

This is Sheena Hutchinson's self-published company. She's published several of her own novels, by herself!! And I'm not just saying this because she follows me on social media and I love her to death, and I've interviewed her once. But she's one of the most hard-working indie authors I know. Not even joking. Once one book is out, she's immediately working on another new project. It's amazing and inspiring to watch her process from afar.

2. Entangled Teen

Image result for entangled teen

Books published:
  • "Lux" series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  • "Anomaly" by Tonya Kuper
  • "The Book of IVY"
  • "The Revolution of IVY" by Amy Engel
Entangled Teen are so sweet and so kind as a publishing company. They always know how to engage with their audience, not just for their fans, but anyone who jut loves to read. They have a very open and positive social media presence, and they throw monthly email giveaways for their authors. I really like them and what they do for the YA community.

1. Scholastic

Image result for scholastic

Books published:
  • "Holes" by Louis Sachar
  • "Harry Potter" series by JK Rowling (books 1-7)
  • "The Hunger Games" series by Suzanne Collins
  • "Goos

Scholastic has been there for me since day one. Harry Potter, Baby-Sitters Club, Boxcar Children, the works!! They've produced some of my most favorite childhood books and on. I remember getting booklets in elementary and middle school of the new books they had in stock, and I'd rush home to order them with my mom. So Scholastic and I go way back! Love them!

TOP TEN TUESDAY #26: Movie Freebie: Favorite Kristen Stewart Films

Hosted by Jamie, Jana and Lauren of BrokeandBookish.com, Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly book meme that presents top ten lists on Tuesdays that promotes favorite bookish themes.

This week's theme:

Movie Freebie -- top ten all time favorite movies, top ten foreign films, top ten rom-coms, top ten 90's movies, top ten action flicks, top ten tear-jerkers, top ten movies your favorite actor/actress is in, top ten movies with PoC leads, etc. etc.)

These are my top favorite movies my fave actress, my girl, my princess Kristen Stewart is in!

10. American Ultra

This was Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen's second collab together, after Adventureland, and I hate that this kickass movie was slept on by so many people. I thought it was hilarious, and Kristen played a daring super-spy!

9. Still Alice

In this touching, heartbreaking film, Kristen plays Julianne Moore's daughter who helps her mother as she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. I felt personally affected by this movie, and Kristen's performance. Her character Lydia fought with her mother about her life, but Lydia was the only one who had dropped everything to take care of her mom when she was sick. I'd do the same for my mom.

8. Clouds of Sils Maria

This movie made a lot of people turn heads about who Kristen is as an actress. Not only did she win a ton of Critics' Choice awards for it worldwide, but she also won the Best Supporting Actress French Cesar Award!! She was the first American actress to ever win that award. I'm glad that people are finally taking notice of her acting ability, and it's all because of this movie.

7. Camp X-Ray

This was another really good movie that got Kristen back on the market after Twilight ended. I believe she took off 18 months from working to find herself again and recognize what she loved about acting in the first place. This was a great start-up to a new stage in her career, and she played a badass soldier!

6. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

I always knew that Kristen played a good Bella, but this movie took her over the top, from a normal human to a badass, kickass, superhero ass vampire!! I loved her style, and she made Bella's shield strong and protective.

5. Adventureland

This was Kristen and Jesse's first movie together, and I thought they were too cute together. Two nerdy, geeky, quirky introverts in love at an amusement park!

4. Snow White and the Huntsman

Kristen played a grungy, grounded Snow White, the type that we don't usually see in the Disney film. This movie set quite a turning point for Kristen personally, but as an actress, I thought she did a great job. She was a fireball of energy!

3. The Runaways

Kristen played a fiery Joan Jett, here with her co-star/bestie Dakota Fanning. Fun fact: they have starred in six movies together: Twilights: New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawns 1 and 2, and the short film Cutlass. So they go way back, and it shows in their on-screen chemistry.

2. Welcome to the Rileys

James Gandolfini (RIP) played a kind of father figure for Kristen's character, and I thought they had a nice, comforting bond. It was different to see her play a young stripper, but it was touching to see both characters need each other to keep themselves going.

1. Twilight Saga: New Moon

This movie, Kristen's heartbreaking, soul-crushing performance as Bella, the whole thing just captivated me and officially made me a diehard fan of her work. I liked her in Twilight the first movie, but this one made me fall deeper into her work and why she was so passionate about it. Forever a favorite!

What are some of your favorite Kristen Stewart movies? Outside of Twilight? ;) Leave comments below!

POEM 13: "No Words" #Election2016

Image result for election day

I have no words.
My voice is numb.
My body is spent.
My head hurts.
And all I can think about doing
Is crying.
I've cried all night,
I've cried all morning.
Not the entire morning,
But I've gone teary a little bit.

He has won.
HE. Has. Won.
HE WON!!!!!
I went from nervous, scared, terrified, hopeful,
Back to scared, confused, amazed, ashamed,
Devastated. I was devastated last night.
I could not stop crying,
While I put my heart and soul into that one vote,
For the one person who I thought was the best,
The brightest,
The most qualified,
The smartest,
The most positive,
The most creative,
The most expressive....
And she lost.
SHE lost.
She.....Lost.....
I still can't wrap my mind around it all.
Even when I'm done crying,
And my body is spent,
I still don't know what to say,
Or how to think.
How do you feel?
How does anyone feel after this?
All we can do is hope.
And pray.
And whatever else.

Don't stop fighting.
Don't ever stop fighting.
Don't ever let this day take your hope away from you.

What are your thoughts on the recent election results? Leave comments below. Be kind. No hatred. No nastiness. Learn to love each other more.

TOP 5 WEDNESDAY (November 9): Characters I Used to Love but Don't Anymore

Note: I wasn't going to do a post today, but then I thought that it may be good to take my mind off and do something for myself for a change. Not that I don't always do these posts for myself, but today felt like I (and you guys, too) needed the distraction. At least for five minutes. So let's go!

Hey guys! This is a new feature I joined from Goodreads' Top 5 Wednesdays, a weekly book group about our top five favorite things in the middle of the week.

Created by Lainey from GingerReadsLainey and now hosted by Samantha from ThoughtsonTomes, this week's entry describes the 5 characters I used to love but don't anymore:

These are the characters who you used to adore, but now you don't. Maybe they changed a lot. Maybe you outgrew them. Maybe your outlook changed and now you can't stand them. Maybe you don't even hate them, you just are neutral about them when you used to run a fan blog about them.

4. Edward and Bella - Twilight Saga

Image result for edward cullen bella swan

I run another fansite for Paramore, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, all from Twilight for different reasons. But mostly, while I still love Edward and Bella from the series, they'll always have a special place in my heart, I've grown very neutral about them. In fact, they're not as perfect and crystal clear as the TwiHards make them out to be. Or very likable. But it's ok, because no character is perfect. I still like them and accept them for who they are. I still write fanfics about them. I still squeal whenever a new Twilight event happens in their honor. I love them, but I'm not in love with them so much anymore, especially now that the series is way over.

3. Jacob Black - Twilight Saga

Image result for jacob black

I might as well add in Jacob, too because when everyone (Team Jacob) was on board for Bella to be with him, I was waiting for her to get the hell away from him. He went from being the sweet best friend to manipulative, cocky, angry kid who was so mad at the world. And he had the nerve to imprint on Bella's daughter when Leah was right there for him all along. UGH. Disgust.

2. Harry Potter

Image result for harry potter

Same thing with Harry Potter. I loved in in the books, even more in the movies. But as I got older, I realized how whiney and kinda ungrateful he was. And I saw the movies first before I read the books, so when I read them, I was sorta in denial of Harry's overall character. So again, I love Harry, but I've fallen out of love with him.

1. Peeta Mellark - The Hunger Games

Image result for peeta mellark

When I first read the books, I felt sorry for Peeta. He had little to no chance of winning the Games, and the only thing he was good at was baking bread and lifting heavy pounds of flour. Katniss and Gale both had to keep saving Peeta because he couldn't save himself. He was kind of a wuss in the movies, too. But that's no fault to Josh Hutcherson, the actor who played him. That's more of a script issue. But anyway, I still grew out of him.

What are some characters you've grown out of? Leave comments below.

So like I said before, I'm mostly doing this post to take my mind off of the election mess that is our country. It was harder than I'd thought it would be lol! Not because I was sad, but because I couldn't find many characters I was over, anymore. But I hope this brought a smile to your face.

If you're feeling down, take care of yourself. Turn off the news. Turn off social media. Rest your mind. Love you guys! ♥
