TOP 5 WEDNESDAY: Books to Get You out of Your Reading Slump

Hey guys! This is a new feature I joined from Goodreads' Top 5 Wednesdays, a weekly book group about our top five favorite things in the middle of the week.

Created by Lainey from GingerReadsLainey and now hosted by Samantha from ThoughtsonTomes, this week's entry describes books to get you out of that pesky reading slump.

Note: Mind you, I've been in a reading slump for the past year or so, since October 2016 until now. But these books got me going before I fell into the slump pretty hard. So, enjoy!

TOP TEN TUESDAY: Favorite Romance Tropes for Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!! Today's post is going to be all about love and happiness. The cheesy kind, anyway. Hosted by Jamie, Jana and Lauren of BrokeandBookish.com, Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly book meme that presents top ten lists on Tuesdays that promotes favorite bookish themes.

This week's theme:

All About Romance Tropes/Types -- top ten favorite hate-to-love romances (from books or movies or tv), top ten favorite (or least favorite) instalove romances, favorite slow-burn romances, favorite starcrossed lovers, etc. etc. Can go so many ways with this one).

Since I read almost all romance, this will be easy for me to figure out!

InstaLoves - when 2 characters instantly fall in love as soon as the story starts

10. Under My Skin by Laura Diamond - The main characters, Adam and Darby, definitely wasted no time on being together in a hospital!

9. How to Be Cool by Annie Carr - Another cute, little romance novel about two weird characters, Ethan and Laura, who fall in love way too quickly. Ethan is a disabled character, a young boy with cerebral palsy, but his heart falls for Laura all the way.

8. Wendy Darling: Stars by Colleen Oakes - I can't remember if this was an instalove book or not, but I'm sure it was because Wendy and Peter Pan were all over each other in here.

Slow Burns - when 2 main characters either hate each other then slowly fall in love, or are completely screwed up in confusion, and fall in love at the very end

7. Running in the Dark by Inger Iversen - Bessie and Trace's banter towards each other was hysterical, but them falling for each other was even better. It's hard to believe that their relationship happens in one day!

6. Discovering April by Sheena Hutchinson - This is another book I can't remember if it was a slow burn or instalove... I don't think it was instalove because Jared and April knew each other from when they were friends when they were little kids, but they weren't close. Then when Jared's parents died, he completely cut her off until she got him to start talking again. And then they dated, fell in love, broke up then got back together. I don't know, I'll have to ask Sheena if she's not too busy lol.

5. Anomaly by Tonya Kuper - Josie and Reid were another couple where all they did was banter all through the book. Granted, Josie had to get used to a new world and her new powers, but their arguing was hilarious!! Josie was an epic nerd, and Reid loved that about her.

4. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - Hazel Grace and Gus loved each other deeply, but it didn't start out that way. Gus had a deep crush on her, but she'd wanted to stay friends to save him from hurting him in case she died first [they both have cancer]. But when he'd done all he could just to get her the one thing she'd always wanted, that was when she finally fell for him. Super sweet!! I'd love a young man like Gus in my life.

3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - Katniss definitely has a tough exterior that no man can crack, so it was definitely a rough burn for her and Peeta to get together. And when they did, it wasn't even because she was in love with him, she did it to save herself and her family. She let all these people lead her around, and yet the only thing she cared about was Peeta?! When he was always needing saving?! Sorry, I went on a little rant there lol. I like Peeta, but at least Gale was more built for speed and aggression.

2. Divergent by Veronica Roth - Four and Tris had a rocky start back in the day. They didn't hate each other, but since Tris was trying to keep away from being noticed, she had to avoid him. But then he found out she was Divergent, however, he was too! So they matched! And their love for each other was epic!!

1. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer - The biggest fantasy-romance couple who went through a massive slow-burn in the first book, a breakup and makeup in the second, a love triangle in the third, a marriage, sex, baby, and an epic battle in the last: Edward and Bella!! [And yes, I know that was a very long sentence, but it needed to be said! lol]

So those are my favorite romantic tropes. I'd love to know your choices in the comments below.

TOP TEN TUESDAY #33: More Diversity, Please!!

Hosted by Jamie, Jana and Lauren of BrokeandBookish.com, Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly book meme that presents top ten lists on Tuesdays that promotes favorite bookish themes.

This week's theme:

Top Ten Books I Wish Had (More/Less) X In Them: (the original idea came from Andi who suggested top ten books I wish had more kissing which I thought could be fun but also realize it might not be everyone's thing! Could also be top ten books I wish had more diversity in them or top ten books I wish had less violence in them or less romance focus in them or top ten books I wish had more dragons in them. IDK! Have some fun with this one!)

Since I'm into this new phase of reading diversely, outside of my comfort zone, be it race, ethnicity, sex/gender, disability, international affairs, I chose some books I'd love to see more from.

4. Twilight Saga - I know there's already a Native American presence within the story, but I'd like it if there were other cultures too, like black, Asian, Indian, and disabled vampires. Are there disabled vampires?! This is the kind of stuff I'd love to know!

Image result for harry potter characters

3. Harry Potter series - Again, I know there were hints of diverse characters (Dean Thomas and the first actress who had played Lavender Brown were black; Cho Chang's actress was Asian) but I wish we'd had other races and ethnicities too.

2. The Hunger Games - There is a mention of a few posts and mumblings of Katniss possibly being a POC character, given that she is described as having olive skin in the books. And yet...Jennifer Lawrence played her. It would have been more interesting an accurate if Katniss had been played by a woman of color. Also, granted, there was the case of baby Rue who was played by Amandla Stenberg, but she died in the first book, so that doesn't count. Her death was used as a plot device to amp up Katniss' strength and agiity, which is curious.

Image result for cinder characters

1. Cinder - I haven't read all of Cinder, but there has been some issues with the Asian representation in the series, so I'd like it if author Marissa Meyer worked on that in the future. Even though she herself is not Asian, her setting up a dystopian, technological world in New Beijing, China, I'd love it if there were different correct representation of that ethnicity.

So those are my top 4 books I wish had more diversity. I'd love to know your choices in the comments below.

TOP 5 WEDNESDAY (February 1): Non-Bookish Favorites

Hey guys! This is a new feature I joined from Goodreads' Top 5 Wednesdays, a weekly book group about our top five favorite things in the middle of the week.

Created by Lainey from GingerReadsLainey and now hosted by Samantha from ThoughtsonTomes, this week's entry describes Current Favorites that Aren't Books:

Sometimes it's nice to take a break from books and talk about some other things you've been obsessed with. These all don't have to be in the same category. Mix it up! What TV shows have you been enjoying, makeup you've been wearing, food you've been eating, etc.??

5. Current Favorite Artist:
Alessia Cara

Image result for alessia cara

I've been rocking Alessia's debut album, Know-It-All, for months now, since her first single "Here" came out back in 2015, and I love this girl so much. Between her bluesy, jazzy vocals mixed with an old-school pop/R&B/acoustic sound, her laid-back tomboy style, her chilled, relatable personality, I find myself within her vibe and her music. Most of her lyrics describe being an introvert at a party, being comfortable with your own intuition, and stepping outside of those four pink walls into something great. I see so much of myself in her, both when I was her age of 20, and today at 23. It will be interesting to see her career take off.

4. Makeup:
Naked 2

I've been using Naked 2 for awhile now, and it's so fun decorating my face with all these different shades and colors. Youtube videos help a lot with what I don't know, too.

3. Youtube:
TheSkorpionShow

Kevin Simmons and Makael McClendon host this Youtube show, called TheSkorpionShow, and I've been watching them since 2011, I believe. And their videos have gotten me through some tough times, both for their comedy and real-talk videos. They're so funny and so unique to the Youtube scene, and I hope they take their show to TV or Netflix someday. I am clearly obsessed with them, because I have a full playlist of favorite videos from their show!!

2. Food:
Chipotle

Now, I'm not a foodie or anything, but I love to eat, and when I eat, I eat!! Chipotle has been my new favorite Mexican place; the nachos, the tacos, the meats, the cheeses, the drinks! I havent tried their burritos yet, but I love their tacos. Now I'm hungry lol...

1. IPhone Game:
Angry Birds POP!

I've been playing this game mostly while I'm waiting for my ride after work, but I somehow find it so relaxing to push and pop bubbles and watch birds go at it on different levels. It's so weird and so much fun!!

So those are my favorite non-bookish favorites, I'd love to know your choices in the comments below!
